The Essence of Rugby!!!

This isn't about two teams taking the field.
Its about taking on the challenge,
Its about the breakaway try,
A good old tight-head and a cheeky smile,
The grace of the sidestep, and cruelty of the hand-off,
The underdog upset,
The big and the small,
The bounce of the ball
Before u think of who wants it more,
Why don't you ask the losing team,
How much they want a second chance....
This is about finding the gap, closing the gap!
The pressure of the up and under on your own line,
This is about determination on your own 5metre line,
The scream of the commentator,
The passion of the die hard fans,
THIS IS THE ESSENCE OF RUGBY!

Silvertree RFC's SMS Campaign

Silvertree Rugby Football Club is a prominent community club which was established in 1954. With its roots being in District Six, the club and its members were forcibly uprooted through the group areas act to their new found home in Lentegeur, Mitchell’s Plain during the mid 1970’s. The club benefited immense victories at its Lentegeur base, which was known to the opposing teams as the “House of Pain”.

In 1992, with the unification of rugby in South Africa between SARU, and its affiliates, the club fell on misfortune with departure of many of its Provincial Players departing the club to play for money at some of the more affluent clubs.

More recently Silvertree RFC gave up its home ground in Lentegeur when it became clear that it was losing the battle against gangsterism and drugs, with many of the youth in the area succumbing to the drug addiction and gangsterism, its club house being vandalized on a weekly basis over a number of years left Silvertree RFC bereft of resources, as well as members.

Our mission has always been to provide a healthy recreational environment, especially to our younger generation, in building a stable society and through rugby we will equip our players with life skills, uplift and empower Our Community and grant each player the opportunity to make it on a higher level (i.e. Provincial or National Rugby).

We have taken the initiative by inviting all foreign nationals from the continent to partake in a rugby program which we will be starting this season. This is to create awareness and promote the rich rugby heritage of Cape Town and South Africa. We’re planning to start a Silvertree Exiles team which will play as a social 3rd side for the club; in turn we provide all infrastructure, coaching, transport, etc. We also aim to highlight racism and xenophobia which is rife in our communities our aim is to integrate our communities through rugby.

In 2006 a bold step was taken by the club to move the club back to District Six, in the interim Silvertree RFC secured a field in Observatory. "Malta Park" now became its new home ground.

Silvertree RFC has always taken responsibility for its own financial endurance. Since 2004, Western Province Rugby has stopped giving clubs its stipend, which was approximately R7 000.00 per team x 3 teams.

We have then been only reliant on its members and various community sponsorships to fund the clubs activities i.e. transport, booking of fields, sporting equipment, funding of 3 senior and approximately 6 junior rugby teams ranging from Under 9-10-12-14-16-19 has put the club under immense financial strain. Events such as golf days, concerts, fashion shows have been used to raise funds, the cost of the golf courses, and other venues increasing exponentially year by year as golf clubs found a valuable stream of revenue, leaving less and less for the club hosting the events.

In an endeavour to raise funds, we now find ourselves exploring other options to firstly promote the club on the Social Networking sites i.e. facebook, twitter, etc. which we have now developed into a full social media profile, which we are marketing relentlessly, we however still look to mainstream media for its extensive reach into our communities.

We have started our “SMS AD CAMPAIGN” in conjunction with IMOBI, we plan to market this campaign aggressively in order to raise maximum funding over the coming season, thus helping us to ensure the survival of rugby within our community.

Our appeal is for community minded people to contact the club to assist where ever possible more with donation of their time. And expertise, in administration, coaching, and even players who are keen to develop their rugby skills.
